Firewood
Wood this season varies
from what I've used before.
Is it just summer's disuse,
or moisture, branch, or core?
It takes some getting used to,
kindle quickly, smolder a while.
Starting medium I choose, too,
Paper, cardboard, scraps from pile.
Seems, when wood is dried in sunshine,
it gives off a warmer glow.
Of course, a recent rainfall
means time to ignite is slow.
Wood from conifers just crackles;
use with care, and limit rate.
Balance with less volatile fuels,
reducing its danger state.
While process of heat I ponder,
the scent of wood fire emits,
what I recall with wonder:
past returns in chunks and bits.
